An Effective File Migration Algorithm in Cluster File Systems

چکیده
I/O balancing is an attractive problem in distributed systems. With the fast growth of high-speed network technology, file migration becomes an effective way to solve the problem. In this paper, we present an effective file migration algorithm in our cluster file system – THCluFS. Our algorithm moves files from congested nodes to relatively uncongested nodes according to the information of current system states. The algorithm makes each file migration beneficial to the mean response time of file requests. Moreover, we use simulation to demonstrate that file migration can improve system overall performance greatly in cluster file systems. Our results indicate that the cluster system with file migration algorithm not only achieves higher scalability and more powerful processing capability, but also makes the effect of network traffic reduced about 12%.

Design of an I/O Balancing File System on Web Server Clusters
The paper presents the design of an I/O balancing file system on Web server clusters. High-speed networks allow machines to access remote data nearly as quickly as they can access local data. This trend motivates the introduction of I/O balancing mechanism into cluster file systems. Two effective approaches are issued in the paper: file migration and unique cache. The former is to migrate the f...
متن کاملAdaptive Tradeoff in Metadata-based Small File Optimizations for a Cluster File System
Metadata-based optimizations are the common methods to improve small files performance in local file systems. However, serval problems will be introduced when applying the similar optimizations for small files in cluster file systems. In this paper, we study the tradeoffs between the performance of metadata and small files in metadata-based optimizations for a cluster file system. Our method ai...
متن کاملA Survey: Load Balancing for Distributed File System
Distributed Systems are useful for computation and storage of large scale data at dispersed location. Distributed File System (DFS) is a subsystem of Distributed System. DFS is a means of sharing of storage space and data. Servers, Storage devices and Clients are on dispersed location in DFS. Fault tolerance and Scalability are two main features of distributed file system. Performance of DFS is...
متن کاملMinimizing Metadata Access Latency in Wide Area Networked File Systems
Traditional network file systems, like NFS, do not extend to wide-area due to low bandwidth, high network latency, and dynamism introduced in the WAN environment. Metadata access latency is a significant performance problem for Wide Area File Systems, since metadata requests constitute a large portion of all file system requests, are synchronous, and cannot be cached at clients. We present Wire...
متن کاملViewing Adaptive Migration Policies for Tiered Storage Systems as a Supervised Learning Problem
Many file migration algorithms rely on simple, unchanging, automated heuristics to make file placement decisions for exclusively hierarchical storage systems. Such approaches cannot adapt to changes in the workload or data center configuration. Systems with manually-tuned policies offer a way to deal with changes but require well-trained administrators, thereby driving up the cost of storage ma...
